Karen R. Orr

Partner, Lafayette

Partner Karen R. Orr counsels hospitals, clinics, physician groups and other health care entities and providers with a wide variety of issues. Her extensive experience, including health care litigation, has given her an in-depth understanding of shifting health care laws and regulations. She regularly helps health care providers comply with a wide range of laws and regulations, including, HIPAA, fraud and abuse, peer review and credentialing, Red Flag Rules, HITECH, medical staff governance, EMTALA and medical records issues.

"I want my clients to have confidence navigating difficult and complex health care regulations," says Karen.

Karen's practice includes reviewing and negotiating health care contracts, such as business associate agreements, managed care contracts, personal service agreements and employment contracts. She also represents health care providers in professional liability cases, credentialing hearings, licensing board hearings, arbitrations and appeals.

She is one of only a few lawyers in the region who represents federally qualified health clinics, hospitals, physician practices, nurse practices, behavioral health providers and university providers. Karen also has experience in business transactions and education law.

"I enjoy the relationships I have with my clients and the opportunity to develop effective strategies to handle their legal needs."

To enhance her clients' understanding of health care law, Karen often gives talks on topics such as the Indiana Medical Malpractice Act, medical charting, HIPAA compliance, Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA) and more. She also contributes to the knowledge of her peers with presentations to the Indiana Continuing Legal Education Forum. Karen is a governor appointee to the Indiana Business Law Survey Commission.

“[She has] an in-depth understanding of shifting health care laws and regulations.”
