Orr Invited to Speak as ABA Panelist Following Indiana Supreme Court Ruling

Lafayette, Indiana – January 29, 2009 – Stuart & Branigin partner Karen R. Orr will speak at a session titled “Recent Developments in Education Law” at the American Bar Association (ABA) Midyear Meeting in February.

Orr successfully represented two former Purdue University graduate students in a defamation suit filed against them by a former professor. Orr argued the case before the Indiana Supreme Court, winning a favorable ruling in 2008.

The ABA Administrative Law Section suggests this case is representative of an “emerging area of professors suing students” and describes Orr as the attorney “who obtained immunity for two Purdue University students when they were sued by their professor after they complained about him.”

Other topics to be covered in the education law session include parents’ right to opt out of curriculum they find offensive, and student speech and the "Columbine factor." The panel also includes two lawyers from Boston, where the seminar will be held.
